Many of you have asked, "how do you come up with these images?". I have been following a formula that taps into the creative process. The Creative Process is easy to work with if you are willing to pay attention to your Self and/or show up to the studio. That tends to be the toughest part in art making. For some, it's like a black line that you must step over every day. Once you get over that fear (god help us) art making becomes the most wonderful experience. Luckily, we are part of the creative process even when we think we are failing at being an artist. I like to call this the Gathering stage. The Gathering stage is daily life, travel, relationships, work, time management=experience. Just think of a newborn kiddo that cannot speak and then one day outta the blue, she says something profound like, "mama" or "dada". It was a culmination of all those months of observing and then finally making sense of the word and it's association. In my classes, tearing images out of magazines is a direct experience of the Gathering process. When doing this ask yourself a questions like, "what images catch my eye?" or, if you want something more concrete, "choose images that tell your creative history (like a family history)". Your brain will automatically pick out images that mean something to you. This may not seem obvious at first, but it will make sense if you stick with the Process....next entry we'll discuss step 2 of the CP (creative process). Above image: Collage work with sketch.
